For Texture Tuesday 28th June. I'm getting ahead of myself, but as I have a few spare moments, I'll post this now. I used Kim's texture "Golden" set at "Colour" 48%, and then "Stained Linen" set at "Darken" 71% and erased "Stained Linen" from the flower heads.

In advance for next Tuesday. I took this photo at a local folk festival and this couple seemed mesmerised by the clog dancing. I thought they looked so sweet and relaxed in each other's company.
For this image, I used Kim Klassen's textures:

Time for Texture Tuesday at Kim Klassen's place. Two of her textures were used here; first "Golden" set at luminance to lighten the area under the word art, then two layers of "Stained Linen" again at luminance. The word art is by Tina Chambers from Digital Scrapbook Place. To finish it off, I added a frame.

A photo from my greenhouse.
Using the texture "Breakfree", which already had the gardening-friendly word "soak", I added a couple of other words and used the texture first set at "colour" 79%, then again as a grunge border. I reduced the photo opacity on the right,layering it over a third copy of the texture.

I like to see wicker baskets on bikes. This is what I did with this one for Kim Klassen's challenge.

Duplicate photo A then filter, coloured pencil 20% (this will become the top layer). I also blurred some of the outer parts of the photo.

Another "Texture Tuesday" at Kim's. This was a photo taken with my phone, so not the greatest quality, but using Kim Klassen's texture: "Golden" made it a more interesting. The main part of the process was to use the texture over the photo, set at hard light 87%. I added another photo layer emphasising the edges of the cup. A copy of the original, shows difference.

A photo taken today in my garden (yes it has some weeds). Some of the dandelions are in seed already. I used Kim Klassen's latest freebie texture: "Serendipity". In case you are interested, this is what I did with the layers:
Photo, Serendipity using soft light at 65%, Serendipity using hard light at 22% with some deletion over seedhead.

Cordes sur Ciel

Another page of photos, this time from the the fortified, hilltop village of Cordes sur Ciel. It dates back to 13C and was a Cathar stronghold. Here, the inhabitants prospered and evidence of this is seen today in large town houses built around an inner courtyard.

Pont Valentre

Another of the beautiful French villages. This is La Roque-Gageac, situated on the Dordogne. We went for a ride on one of the traditionally shaped boats and saw some of the troglodyte dwellings.

South West France

Just back from a wonderful trip to S.W. France.
Here is a composite of Collonges La Rouge. It looked like something from a fairy tale.

The next one is from Rocamadour. This village certainly has the wow factor. It is perched on a cliff rising from the Dordogne valley and extends several levels down. At the top is a chateau, the next level down is a church and monastic buildings, and below that (over 200 steps), the village shops and dwellings.

Studland to Swanage.

From time to time, we enjoy the walk from Studland to Swanage, passing Old Harry Rocks. Today the stunning views were clear and spring flowers brightened the grassland. Skylarks were singing and the only downside was that this walk seems a little longer each time we do it.

Isle of Wight

We have just returned from a short break on the Isle of Wight. There was still a bit of snow around, but we visited Osborne House (home of Queen Victoria) and Carisbrooke Castle where donkeys demonstrate the treadmill which provided water for the castle.

Rolled Background Preview

Instructions for “Rolled Paper Preview”, using PSP.
I was asked yesterday about how backgrounds can be presented with a "rolled" look.
Hoefully, you can follow this in other programs. This is how I do it:

Open a new file at your usual page size e.g.12x12” @300ppi.

Fill with a black to transparent gradient (with the black running vertically)

With your pick tool, drag the fill to the centre of your page keeping the black at the page edge. Duplicate the layer and mirror the new layer. “Merge down” the upper layer. You now have black at each edge and transparency in the middle.

However many paper rolls you want, divide 12” by that number. Let’s say you want to display four backgrounds. Each roll would need to be 3” wide. Again with the pick tool, drag the gradient across the page until it fills 3”.

Select the blank part of the page (selection tool) and then invert the selection. Edit, copy, then edit paste “as new selection”. Repeat across the page. Merge layers if you need to, but in PSP using “paste as new selection” you will not need to.

When using this gradient, have it as the top layer, with your backgrounds stacked below. Taking the appropriate selections from the gradient page, select each background layer in turn, deleting the unwanted parts.

You may need to lower the opacity of the gradient and try “overlay” and “hard light” to see which gives the better result.

I get great pleasure from watching birds. Today a green woodpecker came to the garden. From time to time it searches in the same small spot for ants, but this morning he was unlucky! I'm not sure yet what my contribution will be, but as I live by the "Jurassic Coast, World Heritage Site" I think I shall have to include a dinosaur or two.

My Busy Day

Just popping into my blog to say "hi" to Derfiss, A1nnie and Tora- thanks for coming to look at my blog.

Tuesday is my "volunteering time" and is always the busiest day of the week. I spend the morning helping to cook for about 80 needy people- many of them homeless, and in the afternoon I run computer starter sessions at the local library.

When did I first start gathering mushrooms? Probably more than 60 years ago, and so I felt fully confident in identifying an edible one. Yesterday, I found several perfect-looking specimens and until I came to prepare them, I had no doubt that they were edible field mushrooms- the shape, colour, texture, peeling skin, pale pink gills all looked right. Luckily I plunged my nose into the bag to enjoy that evocative earthy smell- but it wasn't there. The smell was strange, rather like strong disinfectant. As I removed the stalks, I notice a rim of bright yellow appearing. This sparked a deeply buried memory "yellow staining mushrooms". Although not toxic enough to kill, they can cause severe stomach upsets.

RNLI Memorial

Last month, the RNLI opened a new memorial to lifeboatmen lost in service. We visited it this morning and admired the modern steel depiction of a boat and drowning man. The names of all those who lost their lives, are inscribed around the base. I took a photo of the section showing someone who lives on in family recollections.

Christchurch

We went shopping this morning. That sounds a trifle dull, but not when it included a walk around the ancient town of Christchurch. We went past the Priory which has the reputation of being the longest parish church in England. The present building was started in 1094.

The photos show the Priory, Norman House ruins, Mill (mentioned in the 1085 Domesday Book) and other old buildings.

Ladybirds

Today I gathered the last of the runner beans from the garden, then sat in the sun. Lots of insects were buzzing around and they started landing on the warm brick wall of our house. They were harlequin ladybirds and I think they were looking for a cosy spot to hibernate. These ladybirds are not native to the UK and are a threat to our native species, but they are attractive none-the-less. I took these photos of their varied forms earlier this year.

We went to Sussex for the weekend and visited the town of Battle. 1066 is the one date which all English children seem to remember. Prince William of Normandy came across the Channel to defeat King Harold II to claim the English crown as his own. Soon after, he built an Abbey on top of Senlac Hill where the battle had been fought. We walked around the fields with hand-held audio recordings and learnt exactly what happened where. The abbey itself was very atmospheric.

This month I was keen to get my SNL (designing forum at DSP) contribution done early and was quite pleased with the result, but not pleased with the way I displayed it on the kit page. It was meant to be along the lines of TEEN GIRL GRUNGE but it ended up tidier than I first intended- hence the name: "Neatest Grunge in Town".

Car Boot Sale

X <- that marks the spot where I would put one of those little yellow smiley things if only I knew how to do it!
This morning I should have been at church. 99 Sunday mornings out of 100 I would have been; but today I helped at a car boot sale in aid of our local soup kitchen. Usually the cupboards are well stocked after the harvest offerings, but this year, people have given smaller packets of food and less of the more expensive protein items, but oh so much pasta. We made a reasonable sum of money, but seemed to take more stuff home than we started with.

A cloudless, warm autumn day made the garden the place to be. There are still a few runner beans and tomatoes coming. I pruned out the old raspberry canes and cut back plants which had finished flowering. A gentian is is full bloom and I took some photos of it. It is kept in a pot so that it can enjoy the acid soil it needs.
